Rough index for 19 US cities, US average = 100

What would your salary need to be in another city?

Pick where you live, where you are thinking of going and what you make. We scale your salary by a rough cost-of-living index so you can see what the same life would cost there. Treat it as a first look, not a quote.

How this is worked out

Each city has a single number on our index, where 100 is an average US city. We divide the new city's number by your current city's and multiply your salary by that. It is a blunt tool: it does not know your rent, your commute or your tax bracket, and the index numbers are rounded estimates, not live data. Nothing you type leaves this page.

What moves the number
HousingThe biggest factor by far. Rent and home prices vary wildly: $1,500 a month can rent a whole house in parts of Ohio and a small room in New York.
State income taxSome states, like Texas and Florida, have no income tax at all. California and New York can take more than 10% of what you earn.
Everyday costsCommuting, parking, groceries, even the price of a sandwich can double between cities. These are the costs that quietly add up.
