FinBall (Basketball) Program

Equipment/Materials Needed:

  • Basketball Court (or youth toddler hoop)
  • Basketballs (or toy balls for youth toddler hoop)
  • Tokens or Paper Clips (Illustrates Money)
  • 2 Boxes and lot’s of cool “Toys” & “Goodies” for the FinMango Store:
    • What is the FinMango store? Through a creative use of tokens and a makeshift “FinMango store,” students get involved in learning not only how money can grow through savings and investments, but how to use money wisely. The FinMango store consists of two boxes:
  • We award the students with tokens based on participation, energy, and engagement; the more tokens they earn, the more they can spend or save/invest at the end of each session. We make the spending box very tempting with lot’s of “toys” and “goodies!” Nearly all the students spend 100% of their tokens after the first session, with a few selecting to save/invest a few tokens instead of spending it all. The very few students who do save/invest during the first session will usually receive a triple or quadruple on their investment by the start of the next session. The students take note of the investment effect and end up overwhelmingly saving/investing their tokens at the end of lesson #2. The end result, we teach the students to not only earn money, but to be wise with their money. It’s perfectly fine to spend money, just spend it responsibly… because then you’ll have more money to spend later on “toys” and “goodies!”

Lesson #1: basketball Golf

  1. Each player takes a turn shooting from a numbered spot.
  2. Each spot will have a number of shots listed under "Par". This is the average amount of shots it should take to make the basket.

    3. At the end of the game, everyone calculates their total scores (add up how many           shots it took them at each mango spot).

    4. The individual with the lowest score wins the game.

Token (aka Income) distribution:

  • Lowest Score (aka the WINNER): 20 tokens
  • Less than 32 (<32): 10 tokens
  • Greater than 32 (>32): 5 tokens

Lesson #2: Financial Two Bounce

  1. Round 1:
    • The 1st player shoots the ball from 3-point range… if it goes in, the player gets asked a simple “yes or no answer” financial question.
    • If the player answers correctly, they receive one token and can shoot again for an extra token if the ball goes in. They then pass the ball to the next player.
    • If the individual answers incorrectly, they receive zero tokens and have to pass the ball to the next player.
    • The process is repeated for all students in the group.
  2. Round 2:
    • The 1st player shoots the ball from 3-point range… if it goes in, the player gets asked a simple “yes or no answer” financial question.
    • If the player answers correctly, they receive two tokens and can shoot again for an extra token if the ball goes in. They then pass the ball to the next player.
    • If the individual answers incorrectly, they receive zero tokens and have to pass the ball to the next player.
    • The process is repeated for all students in the group.
  3. Round 3:
    • The 1st player shoots the ball from 3-point range… if it goes in, the player gets asked a simple “yes or no answer” financial question.
    • If the player answers correctly, they receive 3 tokens and can shoot again for an extra token if the ball goes in. They then pass the ball to the next player.
    • If the individual answers incorrectly, they receive zero tokens and have to pass the ball to the next player.
    • The process is repeated for all students in the group.
  4. Have the players add up their tokens…
    • 1st Place (with the most tokens) receives 10 tokens.
    • Everyone else receives 5 tokens for participating.

Lesson #3: Around the Money Cycle

  • Win by answering and making every shot "around the Money Cycle" before everyone else. Around the Money Cycle is all about accuracy and consistency when shooting and answering. Follow the proposed shot diagram below:

  • Each player gets two shots and opportunities to answer the correct stage of the money cycle at each spot. If you answer it correctly and make it, you move on to the next one. If you answer incorrectly or miss two in a row, you start from scratch. The first player all the way around and that yells the complete money cycle from start to finish WINS!
  • All participants earn 5 tokens.
  • The winner receives 20 tokens!
